Jimin Kang won the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia for her second LPGA Tour title, beating Juli Inkster by a stroke Sunday when the 50-year-old Hall of Famer bogeyed the final hole.

Kang, the 30-year-old South Korean player who went to high school in Edmonds, Wash., and starred at Arizona State, made a 12-foot birdie putt on the par-4 18th for a 6-under 65 and a 9-under total at Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club.

“Speechless,” Kang said. “That’s not that easy to do for me. I played solid. I hit a lot of putts. As you guys can tell, my score was good enough to win a tournament, and you know, it’s been a while. So I’m trying to soak this in.

“Oh, my God, I can’t believe I won!”

Inkster finished with her second straight 67. She birdied Nos. 15-17 to take the lead, but couldn’t hold on in her bid to break the LPGA Tour age record of 46 years, 8 months set by Beth Daniel in the 2003 Canadian Women’s Open.

Playing in the group behind Kang, Inkster pushed her second shot into the right greenside bunker at 18, then nearly holed out from the sand before two-putting for bogey.

“When I miss it, I miss it right,” Inkster said about her approach shot. “It was a three-quarter shot and I left it out there. I played well all day. I really enjoy what I do. It’s nice to be able to compete.”

Kang, also the 2005 LPGA Corning Classic winner, birdied three of the last four holes and earned $270,000 in the inaugural event.

“All I know is it’s been five years,” Kang said. “It’s priceless.”

She was momentarily confused about her position on the final hole, thinking she was tied with Inkster instead of a stroke behind.

“I saw the scoreboard, and I thought that I was like tied, and I was like, `Maybe I could win with a birdie,”’ Kang said. “And I saw it, Juli was at 9 under. I realized I was like, oh, `I’ve got to make this birdie to go to the playoff.’

“I came too far to just make par and stay in second place. So at that point I wasn’t nervous at all, which I was impressed with myself. And yeah, putt rolled in.”

Sweden’s Maria Hjorth (71) and Japan’s Mika Miyazato (69) tied for third at 6 under, South Korea’s Meena Lee (69) was 5 under, American Christina Kim (69) and South Korea’s Jiyai Shin (70) were 4 under, and American Cristie Kerr (67) was 3 under.

Kerr is projected to regain the top spot in the world from Japan’s Ai Mayazato when the rankings are released Monday. Ai Miyazato shot a 69 to tie for 28th at 2 over.

“It would feel great to take over No. 1 this week,” Kerr said. “It’s been so close the last four tournaments. It came down to one putt in Alabama and last week I had a great finish, but just wasn’t close enough. I’ve been thinking about this race all year. It’s coming down to a putt here or there and it cannot get any closer.”

Michelle Wie shot a 74 to tie for 34th at 3 over.

The LPGA Tour will remain in Asia the next two weeks for events in South Korea and Japan.

Harbaugh Expects Ray Rice To Return To NFL's Best

After a down season in 2013, the Ravens expect the franchise running back to rebound next year.



Ray Rice never looked quite like himself during the 2013 season.

He battled injuries throughout the year and was unable to display the big-play ability that has defined his NFL career.

But the Ravens are confident that Rice’s down season was an anomaly, and that the 26-year-old running back still has plenty of good years ahead of him.

“My expectations for Ray Rice are to be one of the very best running backs in the National Football League,” Head Coach John Harbaugh said during his season-ending press conference. “That’s the standard for Ray.”

Rice finished the season with 214 carries for 660 yards and four touchdowns. He averaged just 3.1 yards per carry, significantly off from his career average of 4.3 yards per carry.

Rice pointed to injuries as the root cause of the down season, as he dealt with a hip injury early in the year and then a thigh issue in the final two weeks. The injuries were muscular problems, Rice said, which were different than anything he had previously dealt with in his career.

“It was something that limited me in doing some of the things I wanted to do, but it didn’t stop me from playing,” Rice said. “It’s just something that I dealt with. But, everybody has dealt with an injury. You go around the locker room right now, you can’t ask one guy who played here healthy, 100 percent. So, if I was 85 percent, that’s 100 percent on Sundays. So, that’s where I was at with it.”

Harbaugh praised Rice for playing through the injuries and missing just one game all year.

“Ray Rice fought through some things,” he said. “There were probably some issues he had with his legs that other players wouldn’t have even played with [and] just would have said, ‘I’m out.’ That’s not who Ray is. Ray fought through that early on.”

In addition to the injuries, the Ravens also had other issues with the running game. The offensive line struggled all season, having replaced three starters from last year’s Super Bowl line. Problems in the passing game were also an issue, as the Ravens weren’t able to move the ball through the air to prevent defenses from stacking the box to stop the run.

The issues combined to leave the Ravens with a franchise low 83 rushing yards per game. While Rice took a fair share of criticism throughout the season, the other backs on the roster didn’t fare any better. BackupBernard Pierce averaged 2.9 yards per carry.

“The numbers weren’t there this year,” Harbaugh said. “There are different reasons for that.”

To get back on track in 2014, Rice explained that he will undergo an offseason study to review his training and weightlifting habits. He even suggested trying to cut back on muscle to lose weight and increase his speed.

Rice is known for his tough offseason training regimen, which Harbaugh expects to have him in top shape when the Ravens open training camp this summer.

“Nobody works harder than Ray,” Harbaugh said. “I’m very confident that when he says he’s going to come back in the best shape of his life and be better than ever, I’m confident that he’s going to do exactly that.”

　「WGC-HSBCチャンピオンズ」の3日目。トータル1オーバーの49位タイからスタートした藤田寛之は7バーディ・3ボギーの“68”で回り、トータル3アンダー33位タイまで浮上して最終日を迎えることとなった。

　藤田は川村昌弘らと同組で10番ティからスタート。「先週の日曜日に回ってまさか1週間もしないうちに中国で回ることになるとは」と苦笑いを浮かべたものの、「リラックスしてできるというのはあった」と日本勢2人でスコアを伸ばした。

　「途中から少し悪くなって、ショートゲームでとれれば良かったけどそれもできなかった」と2つスコアを伸ばして迎えた中盤は3つのボギーを叩いたものの、後半3番のバーディを皮切りに復調。5、6番で連続バーディを奪うと、8番パー5も約77ヤードの3打目を1メートルにつけてバーディ。最終9番も約8メートルを沈めて終盤に急浮上を果たした。

　“早出特打ち”が奏功だ。この日藤田は通常よりも30分コース入りを早めてショットを入念にチェック。「毎日球数を打っている中でイメージを一つにしていたので、今日は2カゴ打ち込みました」とスイングと球筋のイメージを同化させる作業に没頭した。フェードボールを打っていく中で「アドレスで左を向きすぎないように気をつけてやった」と細かなチェックポイントもスタート前にしっかり修正。この日の好スコアにつなげて見せた。

　今シーズンはショットの不振にあえいできたものの「最悪の状態は抜け出したと思う」とここにきて状態は上向いてきている。「レベルの高いところでやることで自分を強くしてきているので、ある程度のゴルフができればそういう気持ちにもなる」。40歳を越えてなお挑戦者として海外で戦うことで成長を続けてきた賞金王。光明と共に闘争心がよみがえってきた。

　中国にあるシャーシャン・インターナショナルGCで開催中の「WGC-HSBCチャンピオンズ」は3日目を終了。トータル9オーバーの76位と屈辱のブービーからスタートした石川遼は、5バーディ・1ボギーの“68”でスコアを4つ伸ばしトータル5オーバーの70位タイに浮上した。

　裏街道の最終組でスタートした石川は11番で約13メートルのパットを放り込みバーディを先行させると、14番パー5でもバーディを奪取。17番ではバンカーから約25ヤードを直接放り込んでガッツポーズを作るなど悪いなりにも見せ場を作った。後半は最終9番をセカンドのミスからボギーとしたものの、“81”を叩いた初日から日に日にスコアを上げてフィニッシュした。

　2日目終了時には「グチャグチャ」と悩みをこぼしたスイングに、わずかながら安定感が戻ってきた。昨日はホールアウト後日が傾くまで練習場で打ち込みを行いスイングを調整。「良かった時に比べて手元が下がって前傾が深くなっていた。今はレイドオフ(トップでクラブヘッドが飛球線の外側をさす)を意識しているんですけど、どうしてもアップライトに戻ってきてしまう」と問題点を明確にした。

　この日もラウンド中は、しきりにトップから切り返しにかけてスイングをチェック。「完璧かなと思った球が思ったよりも4メートルくらい左にいっていて、ドロー回転がきつくてちょっとつかまっている」とまだまだ好調時には及ばないものの、8番では約100ヤードの3打目をピン30センチにつけるなど、なんとか復調への道筋がついた形だ。

　だが、スコアは伸ばしたもののトップとは大差がつき上位進出も厳しい位置。前戦で2位タイという好成績を挙げて、今大会は周囲も本人も期待が高かっただけに「残念な結果ではある」と本音も漏らした。それでも、「4日間戦えるしショットは試合を通して直していける。あと1日でどれだけ直せるかで来週以降やることが変わってくる」と前向きさは失っていない。

　この日もホールアウト後は暗くなるまで練習場で調整。あとはコースで体現するだけだ。

　藤田寛之らと共にINからスタートした川村は11番でボギーが先行するも、12番パー3でティショットをピン右1.5メートルにつけてバーディとしたのを皮切りに3連続バーディを奪取。「グリーンが止まってプレーしやすかった」というコンディションも味方にピンを果敢に攻めた。

　中盤は足踏みが続いたものの、最終9番は2段グリーン下から約8メートルのバーディパットをねじ込み1アンダーフィニッシュ。「ガマンもあり、もっと伸ばせたというのもあり、何とも言えない。悪くないけどもうちょっと」と大満足のラウンドとはいかなかったが、今大会初のアンダーパーをマークしてまだまだ上位を狙える位置で最終日を迎えることとなった。

　明日の最終日は一時的に雨も降る予報となっており、コンディションの変化にも気をはらう必要はありそうだが、「1打でも良いスコアで回ってきたい。最終日もアンダーで」。日本の20歳はブレない気持ちで貪欲に上位進出を目指していく。

＜WGC-HSBCチャンピオンズ　最終日◇3日◇シャーシャン・インターナショナルGC(7,266ヤード・パー72)＞

　中国で開催中の「WGC-HSBCチャンピオンズ」の最終日は、3つ巴の混戦となった。この日首位からスタートしたダスティン・ジョンソン（米国）が前半で1ストローク伸ばしたが、バーディラッシュで前半4ストローク伸ばした2位のイアン・ポールター（イングランド）に通算19アンダーで並ばれ後半へ入った。

　その2人と1打差で追うのはグレアム・マクドウェル（北アイルランド）。マクドウェルも前半4つ伸ばし通算18アンダーとしている。続く通算15アンダー4位タイにはスペインのセルヒオ・ガルシアとジャスティン・ローズ（イングランド）の2人が並んだ。さらに通算14アンダー6位タイに昨日コースレコードを出したドイツのマーティン・カイマーと初日首位だったローリー・マキロイ（北アイルランド）としている。

　日本勢の藤田寛之と川村昌弘が共に通算2アンダー48位としている。そして、昨日4つ戻し復調の兆しを見せた石川遼はこの日も前半で2つ戻すことに成功。通算3オーバー68位タイに浮上した。
